Jesus
established the church in order to meet the basic human requirement of
nurture and support. We all have needs. And that’s what the church
is all about. It’s not a place where we come to show off our uprightness
like some fancy new hat. It’s a place where we come to help each
other. The apostolic church became a fellowship of believers committed
to each other. The minutes of the early church read:
“They
devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and TO THE FELLOWSHIP,
to the breaking of bread and to prayer....And the Lord added to their
number daily those who were being saved.”

2:42, 47.
