Gleanings from the Psalms

Chapter 20

Psalm 12: Inclined to Speak as We Please

When we are inclined to think that we have a right to say whatever we please, it will be well for us to read the following: "The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaks proud things; Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own; who is lord over us?" (Psalm 12:3-4)

Our lips are not our own, for we ourselves are not our own. Every organ of our bodies belongs to the Lord, for Him to use as He will, to His glory. "The tongue can no man tame." (James 3:8)

Since this is so, we do well to deliver ourselves unreservedly over to the Lord, praying, "Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips." (Psalm 141:3)--Present Truth, September 12, 1901--Psalm 12:3-4.
