Gleanings from the Psalms

Chapter 89

Psalm 40: Our Song

"The Lord is my strength and song." (Exodus 15:2)

Why then should it be thought that there is anything about the service of God that is dismal and sad? It is a service of song. The psalmist says, "He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God." (Psalm 40:3)

We are called to "show forth the praises of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light." (1 Peter 2:9)

Is there anything sad about coming out from darkness into the bright light? This is what the service of God is,--standing in the light where His glory can be seen upon us, and rejoicing in it. "For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon you, and His glory shall be seen upon you." (Isaiah 60:2)

And if we stand there, that song will be in our mouth, and not words of discouragement and lamentation; "He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God" (Psalm 40:3) and then, "many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord."
